Statement from Mike Daulton, Executive Director of Bat Conservation International:

“We are strongly opposed to the misguided decision that the County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee made today to move forward with the reckless development of Miami Wilds, a water park and hotel that will lead to the irreversible decline and possible extinction of the second largest population of Florida bonneted bats – the rarest bat in the United States.

The reckless site selection will cause devastation for the Florida bonneted bat and other species within the area. The project will be reviewed at the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners’ meeting on Oct. 6 for final vote. We will be there and will continue to oppose the siting of this project at Zoo Miami as it will destroy a rare habitat and is illegal per the Endangered Species Act.”
