Early detection aids protection efforts

In early July, Pd (Pseudogymnoascus destructans), the fungus that causes White-nose Syndrome (WNS), was reported found for the first time in Northern California. The early detection resulted from a collaboration between the National Park Service, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and BCI to carry out surveillance for the invasive fungus in western states. These efforts are part of the national WNS response effort.

Thus far, only trace amounts of the fungus have been detected, and there is no evidence of infected bats or bats dying from WNS in California. Our vigilant surveillance efforts in California and throughout the western U.S. will continue to aid our efforts to protect bats.
