MIAMI, Fla. – (Oct. 24, 2019) – The FPL Bat Lab at Zoo Miami officially opened today focused on providing solutions to protect the federally endangered Florida bonneted bat. The lab’s focus is on understanding the species’ needs in urban environments and providing on-the-ground conservation projects to ensure long-term sustainable population growth for this rare bat species.

Bat Conservation International (BCI), Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and Zoo Miami are partners supporting the lab’s research and community outreach initiative.

The Florida bonneted bat is a federally endangered species found nowhere in the world but Southern Florida. Named for the way its ears form a fetching cowl over its inquisitive, long-snouted face, the Florida bonneted bat is Florida’s largest—but also its rarest.

The FPL Bat Lab at Zoo Miami is the first-of-its-kind in the area and will actively protect the Florida bonneted bat. The lab’s conservation efforts will include monitoring the health of the bats, community outreach and awareness, discovering what insects are important prey, and using data to better understand the bat’s range in the urban landscape.

The lab will also construct, install, and monitor specially designed bat houses throughout Miami-Dade County as part of a longer-term goal of creating safe homes for the Florida bonneted bats.

“The goal of the bat lab is to improve understanding of the Florida bonneted bat in order to best protect it for future generations,” said Melquisedec Gamba-Rios, Research Fellow at BCI. “This initiative would not be possible without the support of dedicated partners such as Zoo Miami and FPL. We’re grateful for their continued support as we launch the lab and look forward to a successful partnership that engages the community and helps bats thrive.”

The announcement coincides with Bat Week, an international, annual celebration designed to raise awareness about the need for bat conservation. For more information, visit MiamiBatLab.org.
