Bat Colony Threatened at the Huntsville Unit Cotton Warehouse

Statement from Mylea Bayless, Senior Director of Network and Partnerships for Bat Conservation International.

“Unless and until the bat colony successfully relocates to nearby bat houses, we do not support the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) plan to demolish the Huntsville Unit Cotton Warehouse. A rushed demolition of this site without proper safeguards would threaten public safety, the local economy, and Texas natural resources.

A careless decision would displace over 750,000 Mexican free-tailed bats, forcing them to relocate to surrounding homes and schools, as well as jeopardize one of the largest colonies of this bat that is listed in Texas as a ‘Species of Greatest Conservation Need’.

We encourage TDCJ to ensure the bat houses provide enough space and the proper conditions for the colony and to give the bats ample time to resettle. BCI stands ready to serve as a partner to help ensure the plan for demolition of this warehouse is handled with proper safeguards and does not violate state or federal wildlife laws.”
