Wish List. 1997

Your help with any of the following special needs would greatly increase our effectiveness. To make a donation, or for more information, please call Bob Benson at BCI, (512) 327-9721, ext. 27.

Specialty Camera Equipment
High-quality photos are vital in our effort to show the value of bats. All members of BCI's field staff are responsible for documenting their projects and the bats and habitat they are working to protect. Unfortunately, we don't have enough equipment to cover our growing number of projects; we need a lightweight tripod, a flash slave, and a wide-angle lens for challenging shots in caves and mines. Our supplier's discounted price for the above items is $1,800, and any donation towards this amount would be greatly appreciated.

GPS Field Equipment
BCI's field biologists request assistance in the purchase of two Global Positioning Systems. These electronic mapping and compass systems can give researchers an exact indication of their location anywhere in the world via satellite. Because maps are not available for much of the remote bat habitat where we work, these instruments would be a great advantage in ensuring both accurate data and the safety of staff during abandoned mine surveys, radiotracking, and mist netting. The cost for two Garmin GPS III electronic map/software/cable systems is $930.

Audiovisual Equipment
After being used for innumerable school programs over the years, BCI's portable viewing screen has finally worn out. A gift to cover the expense of a new Daylight 50 x 50 projection screen ($275) would be greatly appreciated.

BCI thanks Gregory Contas of W. Hartford, CT, for his donation toward an infrared thermometer needed for field work. We would also like to apologize for a Wish List error in the last issue of BATS and properly thank Lars Petterson of Pettersson Electronik AB in Sweden for his donation of a Pettersson D980 bat detector.
