Volunteer with BCI in Austin

Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge in the center of downtown Austin!

Ever wanted to learn more about bats and share your knowledge? Please consider becoming one of our valuable volunteers at the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge in the center of downtown Austin!

We are looking for BAT AMBASSADORS, volunteers who would like to engage with the public and present information about the history of Austin’s iconic Mexican free-tailed bats.

Our volunteers are at Congress Avenue Bridge four nights a week, Thursday through to Sunday. Shifts run from 2 to 2 ½ hours, approximately 7 to 9 p.m., depending on time of the bat emergence, crowds and other variables. You will be encouraged to sign up for a regular shift on our volunteer website, and weekly is preferred, however we don’t ask for a minimum number of hours. It’s definitely more fun though, if at least three volunteers (called docents) are present each night.

We are looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones! We will present information about Austin’s iconic Mexican free-tailed bats, and will arm you with most of what you’ll need to answer questions from the public and be an ambassador for bats. We say MOST of what you’ll need because you can never tell just what you may be asked – let’s just say you will be as well prepared as possible. If you are a returning docent, we want to hear from you about your experiences in prior years; if you are brand new, we’ll answer your questions and give you sources for your own research.

A live Mexican free-tailed bat (or bats) will be in attendance at the training session to show you, close up, just who you will be talking about!

Please RSVP to Dianne Odegard at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Directions to BCI and more information will be available in the week before the class, and if necessary, a second class may be scheduled in May. We hope to see you on Wednesday, April 22!
