Protect the Edwards Aquifer and Save the Cave

Dear Friends,

For the past year, San Antonio City officials, Bat Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy and many other organizations and community leaders have been searching for a solution to avert a 3,500-home development over the Edwards Aquifer and adjacent to BCI’s Bracken Cave Preserve.

We are very close to solving this dilemma by purchasing the property called Crescent Hills directly from the willing seller- yet so much depends upon the San Antonio City Council.  Next week, on the morning of October 16th they will meet to vote on whether to invest $5 million from their Edwards Aquifer Protection Program toward the purchase of the property and a conservation easement to protect aquifer recharge.

This City Council vote to purchase land for aquifer recharge would immediately leverage additional funds to protect water and wildlife, including the bats of Bracken Cave.

Whether you are in El Paso or Peoria, I know the City Council would love to hear from you. We are asking all of BCI’s supporters to send a short message to the Council Members encouraging them to approve the use of Edwards Aquifer Protection Program funds to purchase the Crescent Hills property and protect aquifer recharge.

"Dear Honorable Councilmen and Councilwomen,

Next Thursday, you will have the chance to make history and I hope you will vote “YES” to invest Edwards Aquifer Protection Program Funds toward the purchase of Crescent Hills. I thank you in advance for the wonderful support you are providing to help safeguard the Edwards Aquifer and keep the Bracken Bat Cave free from the impacts of development.

By helping to purchase this property and holding a conservation easement for aquifer recharge, the City will protect the overall health of the Edwards Aquifer and ensure San Antonio’s drinking water for many years to come.

Thank you,
