Volunteer Positions Offer Unique Opportunities

The Resource Assistant Program of the Student Conservation Association (SCA) places adult volunteers in 10 to 14 week positions as professional assistants. The SCA is a non-profit, educational organization that has provided the opportunity to participate in management and conservation of natural resources in the United States for over 30 years. Although individuals serve as volunteers, the SCA provides them with funds to meet basic travel and food expenses, with housing provided free of charge.

Positions working with cave resources, including bats, are available for 1988 in five locations, allowing volunteers to work directly with cave management specialists and providing the opportunity to explore some new and unique cave resources. Duties range from cave restoration work and research projects to interpretation of geology and cave resources for park visitors. Opportunities are available at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico (6 positions), Jewel Cave National Monument, South Dakota (4), Buffalo National River, Arkansas (2), Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota (2), and the Roswell District of the Bureau of Land Management, New Mexico (2).

For more information, write: The Student Conservation Association, Inc.; P.O. Box 550; Charlestown, NH 03603. Applications for next summer must be received by March 1.
