It's A Girl!

By Barbara French

On February 12, 2001, BCI welcomed a new addition to our straw-colored fruit bat colony (Eidolon helvum). Named Zena, the baby has very large feet, so she can cling securely to her mother. She was born with fur on her back, but none on her tummy. She is pictured here with her mother, Zuzu, who is very loving and protective. The two share their cage with Zoe, one of BCI's Goodwill Ambatsadors and a trusted companion, and Zuri, a distinguished gentleman in his twenties who was one of BCI's early bat stars, but who has now retired from public life. Zuri appears to be the proud father. However, confirmation of paternity is pending DNA testing.
