Position Description: Bat Conservation International’s Subterranean Program is seeking a highly trained, highly motivated subterranean specialist that will be able to function safely, efficiently, and professionally in a variety of environments throughout the United States. The successful candidate will lead a team of trained surveyors to perform internal and external surveys of abandoned mines and caves in cooperation with the organization’s many partners. Surveys will require extensive knowledge of Western bat biology and ecology, advanced rappelling techniques, technical rock climbing (traditional and sport), self-rescue, surface and underground abandoned mine hazards, hard rock mining history and methods, advanced first aid, and CPR. Additionally, the specialist will write reports, manage data, and be responsible for helping to identify funding sources. Experience in grant writing, database management, and GIS will be beneficial. Extensive experience and knowledge in 4x4 off-road driving is required as many project areas are remote and have extremely rough access. Excellent driving record is required. Hiking, backpacking, and camping will sometimes be required. Finally, serving as the team leader for survey teams, a background in leading field crews or other teams will be extremely helpful and desirable.
