Field Equipment Luggage
BCIs busy summer-fall field season is proving particularly challenging this year with increased activities and limited luggage for transporting gear. Outdoor Products offers a wheeled nylon duffle ideal for heavy equipment. Two of these sturdy and spacious bags would make a big difference ($180 for two). We also have an immediate need for four durable tote bags to carry mist-net poles. These custom cases are handmade by a colleague and are kept in continual use year-round at workshops and ecotours ($288 for four). ($468 total.)
Thermometer & Temperature Data Loggers
Because temperature changes have been linked to bat population declines, accurate temperature readings are a top priority for BCI biologists during cave, mine, and bridge surveys. An IMC Instruments model 2300 Portable Digital Thermometer ($385) and 15 HOBO temperature and humidity data loggers ($100 each) would allow staff to gather precise data from deep crevices and cave walls and ceilings, providing crucial information for conservation planning. ($1,885 total.)
Laptop Computer System
BCIs biologists are still hoping to raise the funds for a portable computer to record data while afield. The Dell Inspiron 7000 is a multimedia system that will assist them in everything from downloading temperature data in caves to presenting educational programs in classrooms. Donations to offset the cost of this system or a similar model would be much appreciated ($3,399).
