Thank You Friends of the Night

By Paul Kobe

Black against black
A flash in the night
So misunderstood by most
Flapping excessively
Flying amok
Like some pinball gone mad above

Image of evil yet
So timid, fragile
Leaf-like membranes keep aloft
Image of luck
Wealth, prosperity
So highly esteemed by some

Insect eaters
Those of our home
Misunderstood
Beneficial plant growth pest control

Existence threatened danger, destruction
Death is coming through
Wreaking havoc on one thought
To be its own an image of its name
But ... is it?

This victor from another kingdom
Masking our friends in white
They hide from the snow
But a whiter death has come
Come to seek those unable to prepare
In their time of weakness
Their time of peace.

This gentle creature
Feasting all night on those that feast on us.
Is it really their time?
Don't let the black melt into black
Look to the passengers of the night
The riders of darkness
Our brothers with wings
Little brown, gray, indiana, silver-haired, northern myotis

Don't allow for more demise
Death before most recognize in fact
Do all a favor and help the bat
