The greater false vampire bat (Megaderma lyra) is among the very few carnivorous bat species. Found from India, Sri Lanka, and eastern Pakistan into southeastern China, it enjoys a remarkably diverse diet that includes fish, birds, frogs, rodents, lizards, spiders, insects, and even other bats. To avoid alerting prey to its presence, the greater false vampires avoid using echolocation calls whenever possible (see “Sound Wars, “ page 1), depending instead on their excellent vision and hearing to identify targets
